The 5-Minute Brain Dump for When Your Head Won’t Shut Up

You’re already in bed. You glance at your phone.
11:40 p.m.
You close your eyes, ready to finally fall asleep, and then, out of nowhere, four (or five, or could be more) thoughts start running through your head.“ When the plumber comes tomorrow, how am I going to explain that the problem from last time still hasn’t been fixed?”, “Oh, I need to book that hotel near Yellowstone tomorrow. I should check if there’s a promo code first.” “Wait… how many things are still left on my to-do list?” “The package I ordered last week should arrive tomorrow. But I might not be home. Should I ask my neighbor to keep an eye out for it?” And just like that, you’re wide awake. Your body is ready to sleep, but apparently your brain has decided that 11:40 p.m. is the perfect time to review your entire life.
Sometimes you don’t need to figure it all out. You just need to get it out of your head.
Do you ever get into bed, completely exhausted, and suddenly your brain decides it’s time to have a meeting? And somehow, it’s 1:17 a.m. and you’re still awake.
We’ve all been there.
Sometimes your brain isn’t trying to solve one big problem. It’s just holding onto too many little things at once. That’s when I like doing a brain dump.
What Exactly Is a Brain Dump?
It’s pretty much what it sounds like: Take a notebook and write down whatever is currently taking up space in your head.
No organizing, no perfect sentences, no trying to sound wise or positive, just get it out. So, you might write: “I need to call Mom.” “Why haven’t I answered that email?” “I really don’t want to go to work tomorrow.” “Need toothpaste.”
“Still thinking about that mortifying conversation.” “I have no idea why I’m stressed.” That’s perfectly fine, your notebook doesn’t care if your thoughts are messy.
Give Yourself Five Minutes
Set a timer for five minutes, that’s all. Write until the timer goes off. If you don’t know what to write, try these: What’s taking up space in my head right now? What am I worried I’ll forget? What am I avoiding? What can wait until tomorrow? Don’t worry about answering everything, you’re not trying to solve your life in five minutes, you’re just giving your brain somewhere else to put all that stuff.
You Might Notice Something
Once everything is on paper, you may realize that some of the things you’ve been carrying around aren’t actually urgent. That booking can wait until morning, the package isn’t going anywhere, you don’t need to figure out your entire career tonight. And that awkward thing you said at dinner? Honestly, everyone else probably forgot about it.
Sometimes seeing your thoughts written down makes them feel a little less enormous.
Don’t Turn It Into Another To-Do List
This part is important: A brain dump isn’t supposed to become a 12-item productivity challenge. If you write down something that genuinely needs your attention, circle it. Maybe write one next step beside it, then stop, everything else can stay on the page. You don’t have to act on every thought just because you wrote it down.
Five Minutes Is Enough
You don’t need a beautiful journal spread, you don’t need special stationery, you don’t even need to know what you’re feeling, grab whatever notebook is nearby and start writing; maybe you’ll feel calmer afterward, maybe you’ll just feel slightly less overwhelmed, maybe you’ll discover that you’re more tired than you realized. Whatever happens, you’ve given your brain five minutes without asking it to perform, solve, plan, or be productive, and sometimes that’s exactly what we need. So the next time your head won’t shut up, don’t argue with it.
Grab a pen.
Set a timer for five minutes.
And let it talk.
