What I Pack for a 7-Hour Flight

The things I actually want within reach when I’m stuck in a plane for seven hours.
A seven-hour flight isn’t exactly a long-haul marathon, but it’s definitely long enough to make you realize how much you actually need. I’ve learned that the trick isn’t packing more, it’s packing the things I’ll actually use—and keeping them somewhere I can reach without having to dig through my carry-on every 20 minutes. So here’s what usually comes with me.
1. A Small Notebook
This is probably the first thing I put in my personal bag. Flights are one of the few times when nobody really expects you to be productive. So I like having a notebook with me to write down random thoughts, make a travel list, or simply document where I’m going, sometimes I write a few pages, and sometimes I don't even bother to write anythig, anything, maybe just a notebook in front of me, make me feel at east.
2. A Good Pen
Are you kidding? A notebook without a pen is basically just extra weight. (and why would I bring extra weight in my carry on?) So, I bring one pen that I actually enjoy using rather than five “just in case” pens. One is all you need.
3. Headphones
Obviously. Whether I’m watching a movie, listening to music, or just trying to block out the sounds around me, headphones are one of those things I don’t want to realize I’ve forgotten after I’m already sitting in my seat.
4. A Water Bottle
Call me old fashioned, but in order to save the planet from piling more and more plastic waste, I always bring an empty reusable water bottle through security and fill it afterward. Seven hours of airplane air can make me feel surprisingly dry, (especially when you want to arrive glowingly at the destination), so having water within reach is a small thing that makes the flight much more comfortable.
5. Lip Balm + Moisturizer
My skin always seems to realize we’re flying before I do, and a small lip balm and travel-size moisturizer(or palm size mist) are easy to keep in my personal bag and take up almost no space.
6. A Sweater or Light Jacket
Even if it’s warm when I leave home, I bring a layer. Because airplane temperatures have a mind of their own, sometimes it’s freezing, sometimes it’s perfectly comfortable. (Weird, weird!) Unless you want to share body heat with a stranger sitting next to you, you'd better bring a jacket.
7. One Small “Comfort” Thing
This changes depending on the trip, maybe it’s an eye mask, a book, or maybe it’s a small scarf, maybe it’s a snack you really like, or a trinket you recently purchased, nothing complicated, just one thing that makes seven hours in a seat feel a little more like my own space.
And That’s Pretty Much It
I used to think I needed to pack for every possible situation, now I try to keep my flight bag simple. A few things to stay comfortable, something to keep me entertained, and a notebook for those random thoughts that always seem to appear when I’m thousands of feet in the air. Because honestly, a seven-hour flight can be a little annoying… But it can also be seven uninterrupted hours to read, think, write, watch a movie, or simply do nothing. And sometimes, doing nothing for a while is exactly what we need before the next adventure begins.
